Telegraph: Forest sell-off could leave heritage sites in hands of ‘supermarkets and sleazy bankers’
Mail: Forests are not for affluent weekenders from the City http://www.dailymail.co.uk/property/article-1352230/Market-watch-Forests-affluent-weekenders-City.html
These are just some of the headlines that have appeared following last week’s announcement by the Government that it wants to sell off some of its Forestry Commission estate.
At this stage it’s not clear if it’s an ‘everything must go’ sale or not, but it’s certainly got people thinking about the value of our woodlands and what they mean to us.
As you would expect we work very closely with the Forestry Commission, sharing their high standards of woodland management and commitment to ‘forests for all’.
In fact, we run our 72-acre Chiltern Woodland Burial Park in partnership with the Forestry Commission – where we’d like to stress that, thanks to our 99-year lease our work will continue undisturbed – regardless of the ongoing national public consultation exercise.
We have also submitted a planning application for permission to develop a new site in the Midlands, which will again be in partnership with the Forestry Commission.
And while our parks will be unaffected by the Government’s plans, we will follow the debate and ensuing developments closely.
Properly managing woodland is a huge responsibility – and something we’re very experienced at. We take great pride in what we do and firmly believe that our green cemeteries are a winner for all concerned – the environment, nature lovers and local families.
It’s just sad that we can’t serve more people – but perhaps that could change as the government looks to make new arrangements ….
